If you own a private water well, you are likely well aware that your system cannot function without a well pump. And your pump can only last for so long – typically 5-15 years, depending on a number of factors including manufacture quality and your usage. So how do you know when it is time to replace your pump? Below are some indicators that it may be time.

  1. Air Sputtering

If your faucets are sputtering air while the system is on, this is cause for concern. Your system is designed to allow for smooth, continuous water flow. So is there is air trapped in the lines, you will want to investigate any possible clogs or pressure build-up.

  1. Strange Sounds

If your plumbing is the source of any strange noises or loud sounds, give us a call immediately. Any noise is usually an indicator that your well pump is in need of repair or replacement.

  1. Changes in Water Pressure

There are a couple of things that could be causing changes in your water pressure, but a worn out well pump is one of them. If you notice that your water pressure fluctuates, it is a good idea to give us a call to inspect the system.

  1. Dirty Water

If your water is coming out looking dirty, call us immediately. This is possibly caused by a broken pipe in your system which will wreak havoc on your well pump. This is also a strong indicator of contamination, so do not use the water for any reason, as it could contain harmful bacteria.

  1. No Water

If you turn on the faucet and there is no water coming out, it could be a few different things. If you have already checked that the system is getting power and the water level in the system is good, another cause could be failure of your well pump. You will need to give us a call to inspect the system and determine how to repair or replace the necessary parts.

  1. Higher than Normal Utility Bills

Lastly, if your utility bills are suddenly higher than normal, call us to schedule an inspection of your well pump. A worn out well pump will run constantly in an effort to maintain appropriate water pressure in the system. This constant running means more and more electricity is being used, leading to a higher and higher electric bill.
